Founded in 1841, Woodland Cemetery is one of the nation’s five oldest rural garden cemeteries offering a unique cultural, botanical and educational resource in the heart of Dayton, Ohio. Over 3,000 trees and 165 specimens of native Midwestern woody plants grace the Arboretum’s 200 verdant acres of rolling hills. The Woodland Cemetery Company and the Association for the Care of Woodland Cemetery is in charge of the property’s management and care of the grounds including the Confederate section. Each year, Woodland Cemetery receives a donation from the United Daughters of the Confederacy to help with maintenance of the Confederate section. The Woodland Cemetery Association, founded in 1869, purchased the land and managed the cemetery from its beginnings as a 10-acre burying ground adjacent to the existing old cemetery of Union Church, until 1967, when the City of Woodland assumed ownership.

Woodland’s story began when the Greenwood Memorial Association formed in 1891. Led by William M. T. Forrester, who also served as secretary of the Independent Order of St. Luke, the association purchased thirty acres of farmland known as the “Hedge Plain” on the northern edge of the city for use as a cemetery.

The cemetery was known as the German Cemetery in its early history since most of the burials were of ethnic Germans. In fact, many of the early monuments in the cemetery are carved in the German language.
